“A Night in South America”

First Family Concert for 2015 “A Night in South America”

Night in South America” the first family concert “was held in the evening at the Turramurra Uniting Church. on May 16th.

Many players in the String Orchestra were performing for the first time ever and what a thrill it was for them. The strings were superb and performed a variety of items starting off with Fernando’s Tango following the theme of the concert, a slick performance of Pirates of the Caribbean” and finishing with a rousing performance of “Game of Thrones” with extra percussion and a brisk fiddle tune “Fiddles on Fire”

James Palethorpe, an excellent fiddler, conducted the ensemble. He is conducting the Strings while Emily is on maternity leave.

The Sinfonia followed and opened with a performance of “Autumn” from the Four Seasons by Vivaldi and finishing with two South American Tangos – El Choclo and La Comparsita.

Many positive comments were received from the audience – “a marvelous disciplined performance with a very tight and clear sound”, “excellent intonation and clarity” Emily, who was in the audience commented on how great the strings sounded and congratulated the players on their excellent preparation and fabulous sound.

The Wind Ensemble followed the Strings and gave the audience four items following on in the theme of ‘Night in South America” – This ensemble never fails to produce a most entertaining set of performances. Congratulations to Tim Ferrier and the players for a great sound. “The Girl from Ipanema” in particular was wonderful. Excellent solo work from ???

The evening came to a close with the Symphony Orchestra performing four iconic pieces from South America including the wonderful “Libertango” by Piazzolla. David and the Symphony gave lots of pizzazz to the evening and the last item “Malambo” ended the concert with a bang as all four ensembles met on stage for a rousing combined item.

Thanks to David Griffin our Musical Director for his inspired choice of program, his conducting and his enjoyable MC work.
