On Saturday 15 August 2026, Northern Sydney Youth Orchestra brought the magic of the movies to The Concourse, Chatswood, with From the Silver Screen — a memorable evening of orchestral music performed by our talented young musicians.
The programme celebrated stories and soundtracks from The Bear and the Piano, Studio Ghibli, Fantasia, Thor: Ragnarok, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and more. From imaginative adventures to familiar screen favourites, the evening showcased the colour and expressive range of live orchestral music.
Following a warm welcome from our President, Rae, the Strings Orchestra and its extension ensemble, Sinfonia, opened the evening under the direction of James Palethorpe. Their performance brought together the hard work, enthusiasm and musicianship of our young string players.
Led by Tim Ferrier, NSYO Winds continued the concert with an energetic performance full of colour and memorable music. The ensemble also celebrated a remarkable achievement in 2026, winning the Youth B Grade Concert Champion Band title at the NSW State Band Championships.
David Griffin then led the Symphony Orchestra in a wonderful finale. A highlight was its live-to-film performance of The Bear and the Piano, bringing David Litchfield’s story of music, adventure and friendship to life with a soundtrack by Daniel Whibley.
Thank you to our musicians, conductors, families and audience for making this a special evening at The Concourse. It was a wonderful celebration of the dedication, teamwork and musical imagination of NSYO’s young performers.
